Chronicle and Summary of the 9th International Seminar 'Nitriding Technology. Theory & Practice''

The seminar was organized on September 23 - 25, 2003 in Warsaw. Poland, by the Institute of Precision Mechanics (1PM) together with the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering (IFHTSE). The 109 attendants represented 21 countries. The most numerous delegations arrived from Russia (11 persons) and Germany (7 persons); Canada. China. Croatia, and Japan were represented by 4 persons each. Great Britain and the USA were represented by 3 persons each, and the delegations of Belarus, Italy. Ukraine, and the Czech Republic consisted of 2 persons each. The other countries (Austria, Brazil. Hungary. Israel. Malta. New Zealand. Rumania. France, and Switzerland) were represented by one participant each, and the delegation of the host country (Poland) consisted of 52 participants representing the Polish Institute of Precision Mechanics, higher educational institutions, industry, and students. The seminar was held in the conference hall of the "European" Hotel. The opening speeches were delivered by the Director of the Institute of Precision mechanics A. Nakonieczny, the IFHTSE President H. Totten, and the President of the Russian Metallurgists Association B. A. Prusakov. Professor T. Bell of Birmingham University (Great Britain) was elected an Honorary Member of IFHTSE at the opening ceremony. The president of IFHTSE Dr. H. Totten read the decision of the Executive Committee of IFHTSE and handed the Diploma to Professor Bell. The Russian Metallurgists Association granted Mr. Bell a registered Chernov memorial charter on the occasion. Then the President of RASMET B. A. Prusakov read a greeting from a from a prominent Russian metal scientist in the field of thermochemical treatment Prof. G. N. Dubinin to the participants of the seminar, which presented the vision of the author on the prospects of development of thermochemical treatment fully shared by Russian metallurgists.
