Bohler Bleche GmbH is a division of Austrian specialty steelmaker Bohler-Uddeholm AG. It manufactures high-performance steel strip at Murzzuschlag, Austria, and is well-known as a supplier of technical and decorative laminates; high-alloy cold-finished steel for tools; highspeed steel for saw blades; and stainless specialty, and nickel-based specialty alloys. At the end of 2000, in response to rising product-quality standards, Bohler decided to replace its 50-year-old three-high rolling mill with a more modern unit. Spicer GWB, a unit of Dana Corp., was commissioned to supply the main components for the drive, including the cardan shafts, connection flanges, and Safeset safety coupling. The new mill was designed by Voest-Alpine Industrieanla-genbau. It is equipped with hydraulic gap adjustment, automatic gap control, and roller-bearing work rolls. It has a maximum roll force of 40,000 kN and a maximum rolling torque of 4,500 kNm. Some equipment from the old mill was re-purposed for the new line. For example, the main drive-train consists of: Two identical driving motors (old), each with 1,150-kW; A symmetrically designed reduction gear (old), with two flywheels located on each pinion shaft; A pinion coupling with Safeset SR-PF870 safety coupling; A pinion reducing gear (new); Two cardan shafts (type 498.53), each with connection flanges (new) to drive the top and bottom work rolls.
