For months it was a distant conflict that concerned few worldwide, but after the apparently accidental downing of a Malaysian passenger jet in a rebel-controlled area of eastern Ukraine, killing nearly 300 people, the Ukrainian crisis was placed front and center in geopolitics throughout Europe, Asia and North America. Moscow has found itself cornered politically, while an enraged Kiev launched a renewed offensive against rebels — inflicting considerable damage on a refinery owned by Russia’s Rosneft in the process.
