To quickly and cost efficiently reverse-engineer stamping-die components, dwg Design Services, Columbus, IN, employs laser-scanning technology via the GKS Inspection Services division of Laser Design Inc., Minneapolis, MN. Many stamping dies used by Japanese automobile manufacturers in their U.S. plants are built in Asia under tight deadlines, then tried out and rushed to the United States, according to Dirk Rader, dwg owner. That means not enough time to produce dimensional data needed later to produce replacement parts when the dies wear or are damaged.
