QPI Multipress, Inc. has supplied a five-press line to Verhoff Machine & Welding, Continental, OH, for production of round 12-in.-dia. compressor shells, 20 in. long, for use by the HVAC industry. The line consists of one 150-ton press, three 50-ton presses and a 20-ton press. The company first rolls the components from laser-cut blanks then welds the ends together. Operators then slip the shells onto horns on the presses, and holes are punched. Press tooling was supplied by Duncan Tool Inc., Tipp City, OH. "On the 150-ton press, we do a large coining operation," explains Ed Verhoff, president. "We press down an oval-shaped flat area, about 4 in. long by 2 in. wide, then punch two holes into the flat surface. So we have two operations, one does coining, and then the piece slides onto a horn in the next die for punching holes. The other presses in the line punch holes at different locations in the same part. We just run the part right along that line."
