Russian Oligarchs Ratchet Up Pressure on BP

BP is coming under renewed pressure in Russia as its partners in TNK-BP, the Alfa and Access Renova (AAR) group, gear up for a fresh wave of attacks designed to make the UK firm quit the venture or buy out its Russian partners. But it could backfire on the Russian billionaire shareholders. AAR has warned BP it is going to resume tribunal pro- ceedings in a bid to win an international arbitration verdict that BP broke the TNK-BP shareholder agreement when it tried earlier this year to join Russian state-controlled Rosneft in an Arctic exploration program. AAR aims to use the ruling to demand between $5 billion-$10 billion from BP for lost opportunities and damages.
