The saga of Robert Kearns deserves mention, especially given the topic of Brad Kuvin's editorial on page 7 of this month's MetalForming. Brad writes about General Motors' decision to partner with Chery, a Chinese automotive OEM, to import cars to the U.S. market. As part of the deal, GM will share expertise with Chery to ensure that the autos meet North American safety and quality standards. Brad rightly worries that the agreement will eventually result in U.S. knowhow, and U.S. dollars spent to obtain that knowhow, will end up with Chinese companies that will use it to better compete with U.S. companies and further drain North American manufacturing jobs.
