Russian pipeline monopoly Transneft is gearing up to launch the first phase of the Baltic Pipeline System-2 (BPS- 2) over the next couple of months by starting deliveries to the Novopolotsk refinery in Belarus, which lies near the midpoint of the line. Deliveries to Russia's new Baltic port of Ust-Luga at the end of the BPS-2 pipeline are to commence by the end of the year. Transneft plans to start filling BPS-2 with crude oil in August. Experts calculate that some 700,000 metric tons will be needed to fill the 998 km line from Unecha on the Belarus border to Ust-Luga. It is un- derstood that Transneft will have to buy those volumes, but the pipeline operator refuses to give any details.
