One Week Sees Three Casters, Five Strands Started by Danieli

In the space of seven days, three slab casters (five strands in total) were started by the machines' designer/builder, Danieli & C. Spa (www.danieli.com). The feat was carried out from December 16 through 22, beginning at Baosteel's No.4 Works near Shanghai, China. The new Baosteel caster is characterized as the most advanced in the Chinese steelmaker's expanding organization. It started up December 16, and as of early January the two-strand machine had produced a total of 60 heats yielding 18,000 metric tons of steel slabs. The two-strand machine is said to be the largest ever built by the Danieli Davy Distington division, with vertical-curved strands measuring 41 m (9.5-m radius), and a full complement of advanced control features that include a mold oscillation system, mold width adjustment, an advanced roll diagram with continuous bending and unbending, dynamic soft reduction, and dynamic secondary cooling. Its finished slabs are sized to 230 mm thick, for all carbon grades, and produced at speeds from 0.1 to 2.2 m/min.
