The final elements of the new INMS management structure were put into place following the appointment of Dr. Jim McLaren to the position of Director General in January 2005. Alan Steele was recruited as Director, Metrology, and Katalin Deczky as Director, Research and Business Support. With the new governance model in place, the Institute made substantial strides toward several objectives identified in the INMS Strategic Plan 2002-2007 including 'mo new research initiatives-natural health products and metrology for nanotechnology-and the provision of better environmental controls for some of our physical metrology laboratories. The Dimensional Metrology Program has developed a prototype Grating Diffractometer Facility to calibrate the line spacing of small grating samples, traceable to the international definition of the metre. A variety of grating samples were measured and sent to other national labs (METAS, Switzerland and PTB, Germany) for comparison measurements, as part of the plan to commission the diffractometer for client calibration work.
