In March, cargo handling increases by 2 mt at Baltic ports; coal transshipment - up, fertilizer - down

In March, total cargo handling reached a historic high of the last five years at Baltic ports, 12.58 mt, which is 2 mt more than in theprevious month. At Latvian ports, the gain was the most sizable (up 1.69 mt). At Ventspils port transshipment hit a high of 3.1 mt, up866,000 t. After the weather improved and the ice restrictions were lifted in mid-March, Riga port enhanced cargo handling by 761,000t to 2.87 mt. As reported earlier, in February the port was almost paralysed since there were very few icebreakers to ensure stableperformance. Berth operations were complicated as well.
