INDICATORS OF SUSTAINABILITY

There is no such thing as a sustainable system, it is just that some are more sustainable then others! Indicators are things we can measure or estimate quickly, that will help us make decisions and demonstrate that our practices are sound, both financially and environmentally. Measures of practice (what we do) that are well related to resource condition are more likely to demonstrate change than measuring physical properties (e.g. measure adoption of conservation cropping rather than water quality).It is likely that as individuals and as an industry, we will have to demonstrate environmental performance us part of market access requirements.
