Wire Glass Declared Safety Hazard In Doors

Wire glass, a common accessory used in commercial doors, has been outlawed by the National Glass Association in all non-fire-rated doors following a Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) report. This is according to a press release from Dominion Building Products. The federal CPSC had recently revised the national glazing code with regards to glass used within doors. Wire glass failed to pass the safety standards with non-fire-rated doors. A specific exemption was made for fire-rated door openings, but those glass kits have special size and frame limitations and construction. The CPSC stated standard wire glass kits are no longer acceptable and the use of wire glass presented "unreasonable risk of injury". Since most major building codes use the CPSC as a basis, the standard is now the national norm.
