Histochemical Study of Megasporogenesis in Achyranthes aspera L. A Medicinal Plant

Megasporogenesis and the female gametophyte development was studied in Achyranthes aspera using histochemical staining techniques by localising insoluble polysaccharides, total proteins and RNA The insoluble polysaccharides were at very low level in the developing ovule. In the organised embryo sac there was a gradual increase in polysaccharides. The young ovule was rich in proteins and a slow increase in the concentration of proteins was observed in different constituents of the organised embryo sac in accordance with the changes in their metabolic activities.
