Heritability and genetic advance studies in F_2 population, F_3 population, parents and pooled population of Intra indica crosses of rice grown under late sown condition

Experiment was conducted on the Mysore Field of the Research farm of the R. A. U, Bihar and Pusa during the rainy season of 1995-1997. F_1S of 6 crosses were obtained from ricee section in 1995. The same crosses were made in 1995 and one generationwas advanced in 1996. During kharifl997, 6 F_1s and F_3s along with 7 parents were grown in a RED with three replications. Observations were ' recorded for 16 quantitative characters. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences in all the genotypes of the F_2 / F_3 population, parents (P) and pooled population (D), with respect to all the characters studied excepting grain yield which showed significant differences in F_2 and P whereas total dry matter showed insignificant differences in F, and F_3 while harvest index had shown insignificant differences in P and root weight/ shoot weight ratio which showed significant differences in D. Heritabili ty (bs) was found to be very high (>90 percent) for days to fifty per cent of flowering, days to maturity, plant height, kernel length, L/B ratio, 1000-grain weight in F_2, F_3 P and D for kernel breadth in F_3 P and D, for root weight/ shoot weight ratio in Fr P and D for panicle length, number of ear bearing tillers F_2 and F_3 and for number of grains per panicle along with grain yield per plant in F_3. It was also high (>70 percent) for number of grains per panicle, P for total dry matter in P for flag leaf area in F_3 for harvest index in F_2, panicle length along with number of ear bearing tillers in D. Grain yield per plant a complex trait also exhibited considerable amount of heritability (bs) in all F_2, P and D. Expected genetic advance as per cent of mean was high for plant height and 1000-grain weight in all the populations, fordays to fifty per cent of flowering in F_2, F_3, and P for days to maturity in F_2 , P and D for flag leaf area in F_2, F_3 and D for the number of ear bearing tillers in F_3, P and D for the number of grains per panicle in F_2, F_3 and P for kernel breadth in F_2 for root/shoot ratio in F_2, F_3, and P for harvest index in F_2 and F_3 for panicle length in F_3 and for grain yield per plant in F_2, F_3 along with P. Hence these characters appeared to be promising from selection point of view in die respective populations.
