Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., Los Angeles-With over $9.22 billion in 2013 revenues, a 9 percent increase over the previous year, Reliance once again extended its lead as the market's largest service center organization. Reliance's size and national reach make it a natural for contract sales to supply large, multi-branch corporations. Yet its primary competency is value-added processing and quick delivery of relatively small orders. In total, its various branches handle more than 20,000 transactions per day with an average order size around $1,640. Since its initial public offering in 1994, Reliance has completed 58 acquisitions. The company continues to cherry-pick the best players in metals distribution, along with strategic downstream processors and fabricators. Last month, Reliance announced two acquisitions. It purchased All Metal Services, a UK-based supplier of aerospace metals, strengthening its position in the global aircraft and defense markets. It also bought Northern Illinois Steel Supply Co., a distributor and fabricator of steel and nonferrous metal products. NIS complements Reliance's strategy to add companies that offer higher value-added services. Reliance is still integrating the assets it acquired from Metals USA last February in a $1.24 billion deal that was its largest to date. Reliance now operates over 290 locations in 39 states in the U.S. and in 11 other countries.
