Comparative Gross Anatomical Studies on the Laryngeal Cartilages of Yak (Bos grunniens) and Zebu (Bosindicus)

The vocal fold and vocalis muscles were well developed in yak. The glottic cleft was spacious in yak and narrower in zebu. The epiglottis of yak was shorter with a thick base, having well-developed petiolus. The crrcoid cartilage of yak had two broadlaminae dorsally, and zebu had a shallow median crest. The ventral laryngeal prominence of thyroid cartilage was more distinct in yak. The caudal thyroid notch was well developed in yak. The rostral thyroid notch was wider and shallower in zebu. The corniculate process of arytenoid cartilage was claw shaped in yak; while it was comma-shaped in zebu. INFORMATION regarding the morphological characteristics on laryngeal cartilages of the yak in comparison to that zebu is sparse. Hence, an attempt has beenmade to elucidate the same.
