In this paper, the application of variable structure strategy with sliding mode voltage control or improving the dynamic response of an AC to DC/DC PWM converter is presented. Sliding code control gives fast response with no overshoot and zero steady state error. Our goal is the minimisation of the line current harmonic generated by the converter, providing high power factor and a regulated dc link voltage. A mathematical model of the PWM converter with proposed control strategy and DC motor drive is developed to carry out digital computer simulation of the system order transient operating conditions. The simulation results show the transient waveforms (AC current and powers) and DC output voltage are improved even when the system is subject to: an external disturbance or load variation. Reversal of speed command from +100 rad/s to -100 rad/s. Reference voltage change.
