Alcoa, the New York-based maker of lightweight met-als, has unveiled a new-manufacturing technol ogy, the Alcoa Micromill, to manufac ture aluminum sheet for the automo tive market. The patented Micromill process changes the microstructure of the metal, allowing production of an aluminum alloy with 40 percent great er formability and 30 percent greater strength than conventional aluminum, while meeting stringent automotive surface quality requirements, the com pany claims.
