Economics and Adoption of 'SRI' Technology by Paddy Growers

Majority of SRI farmers were middle aged, educated, having medium sized family and land holding, possessing livestock and television, members of primary milk producers co-operative society and primary agriculture co-operative society / bank, having contact with Department of Agriculture, participating in training programmmes, having high economic motivation, achievement motivation, cosmopoliteness and medium scientific orientation. Agriculture Department officials and progressive farmers were the source of information on SRI. The purpose of taking SRI were to take up innovation at first and to save water. Further, they opined that, less water requirement, more number of tillers, lesser seed rate, lesser incidence of pests and diseases, higher grainyield and straw yield, lesser weed problem, lesser chaffy grain and higher grain weight ofpaddy as the advantages of SRI paddy. Further, they obtained an additional income of Rs. 2197.50 per hectare when compared to conventional method.
