Efficacy of Apramycin in Prevention and Treatment of E. coli Infection in Broilers

An experiment was conducted on 800 commercial broilers affected with E.coli to assess the efficacy of Apramycin at 3 dose levels of 250,500 and 1500 mg / L of drinking water. All the treated birds had significantly lower mortality, higher average weight gain and feed conversion ratio favouring the dose levels (250-500 mg / L) and was well tolerated by broilers even up to 1500 mg / L without any adverse effect. The serum enzymes, serum salts and total bilirubin concentration were not influenced by thetreatment of Apramycin even up to 1500 mg / litre of drinking water. The Heterophil: Lymphocyte ratio and total leucocyte count showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease upon treatment with Apramycin whereas the severity of gross lesions were mild to nil with medication and the histopathological changes in liver and kidney were not conspicuous in any group.
