In Karnataka, sunflower occupies an area of 2.0 million hectares with a production of 0.99 million tonnes (Anon., 2005) and popularly known as the "Sunflower state" of India occupying first position, accounting for 53 per cent of the total acreage andcontributing to 35 per cent of the national sunflower production, insect pests and diseases are the major production constraints in sunflower. As many as 251 Insect and acarine species have been recorded on sunflower at the global level (Rajamohan, 1976).
