Studies on the Yield and Quality of Marigold Seeds at Different Fertilizer and Spacing Levels

Marigold is one of the important flower crop in India due its various uses. They are grown as annuals in landscape garden for mass effects. In view of its importance and ease in cultivation, it is necessary to generate scientific information on seed production for the benefit of farming community. The present investigation was carried out during kharif 2005 at selected farmers fields located in Piriyapatna taluk, Mysore district, to know the effect of fertilizers and spacing on seed yield and qualityparameters in marigold. Three Fertilizer levels i.e. F_1: 225:60:60 Kg of NPK per ha. F_2: 270:72:72 Kg of NPK per ha. F_3: 315:84:84 Kg of NPK per ha and 5 spacing levels, S_1: 30 X 30 cm S_2: 45 x 30 cm. S_3: 45 X 45 cm. S4: 60 X 30 cm and S5: 60x45 cm, the interaction effect was studied with split plot design. Significantly more number of flowers per plant were recorded in treatment combination of F_3S_5 (31.00) followed by F_2S_5 (30.30) where as it was least in F_1S_1 (7.33). The higher number offlowers in F,S5 may be attributed to more branching of plant at that treatment combination. In particular F_2S_4, F_2S_5 and F_3S_4 treatment combinations recorded higher values for all quality parameters this may be due to slightly higher 1000-seed weight in those treatment combinations.
