Progress in Map Ta Phut environmental dispute

For more than a year 76 industrial development projects at the Map Ta Phut industrial zone in Rayong province have been held in suspension waiting for the National Environmental Board of Thailand to draw up a list of potentially harmful activities that require environmental and health impact assessments, and for an independent body to be established to advise whether developments involving such activities should be allowed to go ahead. The draft list of harmful activities has finally been issued after a temporary screening panel was set up. The panel began work during April 2010 and is expected to operate for two years until a permanent environmental assessment body can be put in place.
