Investigations were carried out to elucidate the effects of different preservative chemicals on the post harvest behaviour of jasmine (Jasminum auriculatum Vahl and Jasminum grandiflorum Linn) flowers with and without packaging under room conditions at the Division of Horticulture, G.K.V.K., UAS, Bangalore during 1999-2000. The preservative chemicals used were sucrose 2 per cent STS (0 5 mM) and KMnO_4 (0.2%) alone or in combination with or without packaging. The polyethylene (100 gauge) bags of size18 x 23 cm were used for the experiment. The flowers of Jasminum auriculatum sprayed with sucrose (2%) or distilled water and packaged in 100 gauge polyethlene bags recorded shelf life of 3,5 days compared to control (1 day). Whereas, in Jasminum grandiflorum, sucrose (2%) or sucrose (2%) + STS (0.5 mM) + KMnO_4 (0.1%) and packaged in 100 gauge polyethlene bags recorded shelf life of 3.0 days compared to non-packaged treated flowers (1 day).
