RESPONSE TO LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM NEV MURRAY

Thank you Nev for your valuable comments regarding my outline of "The Environment and Thai Foundries". You are quite right - nothing much has changed during the last year under the interim government. However elections have recently been held and we now have a new government in Thailand. Perhaps things will change since the new Industry Minister has highlighted reducing pollution as one of the priorities of the new government. He said that the government wanted to clean up the four main rivers in Thailand and maintain them free from pollution. He also said that the efforts to solve the pollution problems at the Map Ta Phut industrial area on the Eastern Seaboard would be increased. The environmental problems in this area are by and large due to emissions from the petrochemical industry, whilst elsewhere river and water pollution is mainly from mining and from the tanning and paper industries.
