Production of castings involves three major cost components: materials, energy and labour. The proportion of cost for energy ranges from 10 to 15% of total cost of production of castings. There is limited scope of cost reduction on materials and labour, however the cost saving opportunities is significant on energy component. To reduce energy consumption in various processes in a foundry, effective utilisation of power is necessary, which can be achieved either by increasing the production for the same power input or by reducing power consumption for the same output, hence improving energy efficiency.
