ARECANUT is commonly used for masticatory purposes all ovei the subcontinent It is often referred to as betelnut, It plays a vital role in socio-religious life of our people. It is believed to have some medicinal properties. Chewing of arecanut alongwith betel leaves is a common practice, prevalent among all sections of the society. It enjoys a unique place in the society. It has been in cultivation since time immemorial Arecanut is an important plantation commercial crop of our country Its cultivation is mostly confined to southern and north eastern states. The crop provides employment to over 60 lakh persons directly or indirectly in primary, secondary and teritiary sectors.
