Impact of Horticulture Crop Demostrations on Livelihood of Tank Command Farmers in Karnataka Community Based Tank Management Project Area

Community Based Tank Management Project Consultancy Services (CBTMPCS) unit of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore has carried out the consultancy work on the sub component - Agricultural production improvement in tank system of Jala Samvardhane Yojna Sangha under the minor Irrigation Department, Govt. of Karnataka. The Horticulture Crop Demonstrations were taken up in 50 tanks and was carried out for two years in the same tank. The project through implementation oJTIorticulture CropDemonstrations was able to convince the tank command farmers to take up horticulture crops in place of paddy crop to increase crop intensity by 44.95 per cent, overall water use efficiency by 40.82 per cent, better soil health management through adoptionof organic farming practices, increase in productivity by 40.03 per cent and net return by 31.43 per cent over check plots. Contract farming was practiced wherever it is possible. Better environmental farming practices were also encouraged. As a resultof concerted efforts made by CBTMPCS in the implementation of Horticulture Crop Demonstrations, the livelihoods of beneficiary farmers have been improved.
