Since the publication of the first edition of the WHO standards for semen analysis in 1980, the WHO has been the acknowledged "final arbiter" for the determination of'normal' parameters for semen analysis. Although the WHO has published five editions of these reference values, Cooper et al, the authors of the most recent version, have suggested that the values need to be revised in light of new evidence, and that some concepts need more explanation and supporting evidence.1 The response of the WHO was to convene a group of experts to develop what they referred to as a "consensus position after evaluating the pertinent literature."
