Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a greatly increased risk of premature cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.1 The pattern of disease also differs from that in the general population, with a disproportionate increase-particularly in patients with more advanced CKD-in sudden (presumed arrhythmic) death and deaths due to heart failure, rather than atheromatous coronary artery disease (CAD).
