A New Tool for Dealing with Illegal Logging: A century-old law finds a new application in the modern world

The Lacey Act, a law now on the tongues of many in the forestry industry, did not originally focus on wood legality. Signed into law in 1900 and named for the congressman who introduced it, Rep. John Lacey, the act was originally designed to ban the trafficking of wildlife and exotic species. Nearly a century after its inception, in late 2008, US Congress expanded the longstanding Lacey Act to now ban illegal trade in forest products.
