Being a patient advocate is job one for a registered nurse. The American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics (ANA, 2001) is explicit on the role: 1. "The nurse's primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community." 2. "The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient." This emphasis on the patient has been present since the first Code of Ethics was adopted by the ANA in 1950. While many things in nursing and patient care have changed since that time, this core belief remains the same.
