A Nursing Tsunami: Implementing An Agenda for Change

As many of you have heard, nursing has received a tremendous endorsement from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the multidisciplinary healthcare arm of the National Academy of Sciences. Beth Ulrich spotlighted their recent report in her editorial in the November/December 2010 issue of the Nephrology Nursing Journal. The IOM, in conjunction with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), released a report entitled "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health." You may recall the IOM served as a primary catalyst in creating the safety tsunami currently reshaping healthcare today. This major shakeup occurred following the publication of two revealing reports, "To Err Is Human" and "Crossing the Quality Chasm," both of which shockingly displayed a United States healthcare system that was fraught with errors. The Future of Nursing (FON) report has an entirely different focus, but the strength of the message and messenger is arguably the same. Thus, this report is bound to create another shakeup.
