I am an experienced nurse in dialysis and currently the Nurse Manager and Clinical Director of a large dialysis clinic. As such, I found this article in the January/February 2014 edition of the Nephrology Nursing Journal absolutely fascinating. As stated in the article, there is little documented research in the literature discussing infection rates for hemodialysis (HD) catheters without a dressing versus those that do. For years, nurses working in dialysis like myself have applied a variety of different dressing types and diligently taught our patients not to shower in order to prevent infection.
