What do the short ones do? Study of half dwarf hybrids of rapeseed in the second trial year.

Studies were carried out during 2006-07 in Thuringen, Germany, with an unnamed half-dwarf and a standard (unknown) hybrid. The stem length of the half-dwarf was up to 30 cm less, while crop yields of both hybrids were similar. Ripening of the half-dwarf is more regular and its harvesting period is clearer. Crop yields of the half-dwarf were higher in 3 of 4 trials. The half-dwarf is ideal for combine harvesting. Harvesting efficacy was 8-38% greater, while fuel use decreased by 1 litre/t. The average harvesting advantage of the half-dwarf over the 4 trials was 60 EURO/ha.
