Is mechanical embolectomy a safe and efficacious treatment strategy in patients with acute ischemic stroke?

Tissue plasminogen activator can improve neurologic outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS); however, as an intravenous or catheter-based treatment strategy, it is not suitable for all AIS patients. Therefore, an alternative strategy, such as mechanical embolectomy, is needed for opening intracranial vessels in patients who are ineligible for intravenous thrombolytic therapy.
