Even though the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is extremely high in acutely ill medical patients, the use of prophylactic thrombotic therapy is still not widespread, as there is continuing uncertainty about the effectiveness of the treatment. OBJECTIVE To find out whether the synthetic factor Xa inhibitor, fondaparinux, can safely reduce the occurrence of VTE in acutely ill medical patients.
