Can visual hallucinations be used as a diagnostic factor in Parkinson's disease?

This retrospective study included 788 cases with parkinsonism (473 cases of PD, 44 cases of dementia with Lewy bodies, and 271 cases of parkinsonism due to non-Lewy-body pathology) that were archived at the Queen Square Brain Bank for Neurological Disorders, London, UK. Antemortem assessments of these patients had not been standardized. Case notes and, where available, hospital inpatient records, were evaluated for reports on the presence of VHs and the time to first VH. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of VHs for Lewy-body pathology were calculated, and factors affecting the onset of VHs in patients with Lewy-body parkinsonism were also evaluated.
