A comparison of classification schemes for ketosis-prone diabetes

This study assessed consecutive patients who presented with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) at a single center in Houston, TX between June 1999 and December 2003. Three types of measurements were required for inclusion: BMI, (3-cell function (glucagon stimulation test), and (3-cell autoantibodies. All participants were categorized in accordance with the criteria of each of the four KPD classification schemes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) classification scheme categorizes patients as type 1 a (autoantibody-positive) or type 1 b (auto-antibody-negative).
