摘要

For years, villages such as San Pedro in BOLIVIA'S AMAZON depended largely on subsistence farming for their livelihoods, often illegally cutting the forests around them. With the introduction of forestry reforms in 1996, however, residents were giventhe opportunity to create small government-sanctioned forestry enterprises that could generate income for their communities. The Nature Conservancy and its partners have been helping many villages to practice sound timber harvesting, conserve biologically rich areas, and sustainably harvest plants and fruits for sale and for use in medicines and handicrafts.
