The tsunami that hit Asia last December claimed the lives of nearly 300,000 people and destroyed the livelihoods of many more. Among the areas hardest hit were the eastern and southern coasts of Sri Lanka, an island nation roughly the size of West Virginia. Humanitarian aid took precedence in the days and weeks that followed, but the Sri Lankan government soon realized it also needed to evaluate the tsunami's impact on the nation's natural resources and environment.
