Rallying for a National Prairie

Historically, tallgrass prairie spanned the eastern third of the Great Plains, but today less than 4 percent remains. In 1996, Congress thrilled conservationists when it authorized a groundbreaking new public/private national park devoted to the tallgrass prairie. Encompassing some 11,000 acres in the FLINT HILLS of KANSAS, the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (LEFT) became the only privately owned national preserve in the country, harboring an outstanding example of more than 400 varieties of prairie grasses and wildflowers.
