摘要

Im a cave expert and, by extension, a bat enthusiast. Lately I've been consumed by news of the increasingly bleak oudook for many of these mammals in the northeastern United States. It all started in 2006 with the outbreak of a disease that began sweeping the region, leaving dead bats in its wake and bat researchers in a funk. The disease, known as white nose syndrome for the fungus it causes, is now an epidemic, having killed about 6 million bats across 19 states.
