摘要

Bill Lecture was deep in the mossdraped forests of The Nature Conservancy's Ellsworth Creek Preserve in Washington state when he heard the sound. A 40-year forest-industry veteran who had come out of retirement to work for the Conservancy, Lecture immediately recognized the high-pitched whine: chainsaw. Unfortunately, the only other person who had any business operating a chainsaw on the 7,6oo-acre preserve was standing right in front ofhim.
