IBD: TH9 cells might have a role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis

A study published in Nature Immunology has demonstrated that a subset of T cells (type 9 T helper cells; T_H9) that produce IL-9 might have an important role in ulcerative colitis. "We had seen previous publications on the role of IL-9 and T_H9 cells in allergy, atopy and chronic disorders such as asthma," explains Markus Neurath, corresponding author. "However, the role of the cells in IBD was unclear."
