Trans fatty acid (trans fat) has become a target of public health efforts to reduce cardiovascular disease. Persuasive evidence indicates that trans-fat consumption significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease; one study found that the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) in the USA could be reduced by 6-19% if Americans decreased their proportion of total energy intake from trans fat by just 2%.
