Metabolism: No role for osteocalcin in glucose metabolism - Challenging a paradigm?

Osteocalcin is only weakly associated with glucose metabolism in women without diabetes melhtus, and this association is age-dependent. These results, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, contradict to some extent previous findings in animal models that suggested an important role for osteocalcin in energy homeostasis. "I was interested in whether the insights derived from rodents can be extrapolated to humans and ultimately transferred from the laboratory bench to bedside," comments senior investigator Sulin Cheng. Therefore, Cheng and colleagues assessed the relationships between total, carboxylated and uncarboxylated osteocalcin levels, and glucose, insulin, leptin and adiponectin levels in 64 trios of Finnish girls, their mothers and their maternal grandmothers (aged 18.2,44.7 and 69.7 years on average, respectively). None of the women had diabetes mellitus or were receiving antidiabetic therapy. The researchers also estimated fat mass and calculated the homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) for all women.
