Establishing a Culture of Compliance

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has adopted numerous reliability standards with which NERC-registered entities must comply or face significant penalties of up to $1 million per day per violation. NERC has various tools to monitor and enforce an entity's compliance with these standards. These tools include audits, spot checks, self-certifications, and investigations. It is essential that NERC-registered entities adopt, enforce, and monitor a robust compliance program to mitigate not only the risk of noncompliance, but possibly even the level of penalties assessed should a violation nevertheless occur.
