Six or seven years ago, as shale gas was coming to the fore as radically changing the natural gas industry, I wrote here that natural gas was the "Mela-nie Griffith of fuels." It was a reference to the 1988 film Working Girl, wherein Dakota Johnson's mom played the quiet and competent assistant who made everything work well, without ever getting any of the credit. Natural gas abundance changed our national energy balance, radically changed our prospects for near-term air-quality improvements and carbon reduction, reduced electric rates all over the country, and helped enable the growth of intermittent renewables. But few gave it credit for that.
